15 land and business owners within the Butte Business District, located north of the Trans-Canada Highway #1 in the RM of Edenwold No. 158, have officially petitioned the Town of White City to be annexed as part of the town’s proposed new integrated full-service community.

Presently in the town’s proposal, the Butte Business District would remain in the RM.

In their letter, received by White City Town Council during the May 6, 2019 regular council meeting, the business owners state they fully support the proposal to bring together White City, Emerald Park and surrounding residential and business developments as being necessary to address zoning controls and growth management, economic development and issues of taxation, regulation, police, fire, streets and wastewater infrastructure.

Group spokesperson, Perry Fletcher, says the business owners believe it is in the best interest of their business district and the whole community to come together.

“We all need to put aside our differences and do what’s right for this community, it’s time,” Fletcher said.

“There is too much of a difference between the goals and objectives of the RM and the Town and our businesses are suffering as a result. By joining together as one urban municipality with a solid plan for our future, we will be able to achieve so much more, and our business group wants to be part of that new community.”

White City Mayor Bruce Evans welcomes the group’s interest and support.

“I welcome the Butte Business District’s recognition that our proposal articulates a solid plan and vision for our community’s future and that it will solve many of the problems we currently have and will face in the future if the “status quo” continues” Evans said. "There is frustration with the current governance model and the impact it is having on the services we can and should provide for a community of our size.”

The group’s letter, accompanied by Request for Annexation of Lands forms signed by each landowner, is being considered by Town Council. The Town will be inviting the RM to meet and discuss the Butte Business District’s petition to become part of White City along with the Town’s proposal for the creation of an integrated full-service growth community.
